Free Radicals and Antioxidants

Scientists now know that virtually everyone has the genetic potential to enjoy good health for well over 100 years. Even more importantly, they’ve finally isolated the chemical invader responsible for virtually all premature aging and degenerative disease! It’s called a free radical, and it can cause everything from wrinkles to devastating killers like cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Reducing free radical damage is your single most powerful weapon against premature aging and chronic disease.

How Do Free Radicals Attack You?

Free radicals are highly unstable chemical "buzz bombs" that continuously bombard the delicate membranes and genetic structures (DNA) of your cells. This can cause your genetic code to change slightly as your cells replicate. These changes are known as mutations and they can "snowball" dangerously over time, creating more and more problems. Scientists now know that free radical damage is at the very root of everything from wrinkles to frightening degenerative diseases like arthritis, cancer and heart disease.

Where Do Free Radicals Come From?

Throughout your entire lifetime – every second of every day – your body produces huge amounts of free radicals as a by-product of your metabolism. You produce free radicals even faster in times of stress, disease and exercise. You also pick them up from pollutants such as cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, sunlight, food additives and other pollutants. Today’s environment is an absolute cesspool of free radicals, and the situation is getting worse everyday!

How Does Your Body Fight Against Free Radicals?

Fruits, vegetables and certain other foods provide you with an array of nutrients that naturally prevent the formation of free radicals in the body. These nutrients are known as antioxidants. Other nutrients protect you by inactivating free radicals before they can do any harm. These nutrients are called free radical scavengers. Unfortunately studies show that today’s commercially produced fruits and vegetables no longer contain the amounts of nutrients they used to. And even if they did, our atmosphere has become so polluted that you can no longer get enough free radical fighters from food along…even if you eat the recommended 5 – 9 servings of fruits and vegetable per day!

In other words, it’s now impossible to adequately protect yourself from free radical damage unless you supplement your diet with effective free radical-fighting nutrients. No wonder so many people suffer from cancer, diabetes and other "mystery" diseases!

Which Antioxidants and Free Radical Scavengers Does Your Body Need?

The most well known free radical fighters are beta-carotene, vitamin C and E, and selenium. However, during recent years several far more potent antioxidants and free radical scavengers have been found. Some of them are so potent that clinical trials using therapeutic dosages have actual reversed devastating diseases like arthritis, asthma, heart disease and even certain cancers!

The most potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger known to science is N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). Other important ones are lycopene, quercetin, bilberry, grape see extract, co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and milk thistle. Here are just a few examples of what therapeutic doses of these amazing substances have been shown to do:

  • NAC:  Found to exercise more antioxidant potential than virtually all other antioxidants combined! Known as the universal antioxidant because it activates and increases the potential of all other antioxidants. Directly raises levels of a potent antioxidant called glutathione that is produced by the liver (studies show that oral glutathione consumption does not increase glutathione levels in the body). Various studies found that NAC supplementation improved blood pressure and body fat/cholesterol ratios, prevented and even reversed clotting inside blood vessels, worked with vitamin C to prevent mucus buildup, and helped respiratory problems like colds, bronchial infections and asthma. NAC has also been found to help prevent DNA mutations.

  • Lycopene: Food sources are pasta sauces, ketchup and other tomato products. Research has shown that when tomatoes are cooked, the process concentrates the percentages of lycopene, making it one of the few nutrients known which is not damaged by heating. Lycopene has been shown to prevent bad (LDL) cholesterol from oxidizing and subsequently building up on artery walls. In one study daily consumption reduced the incidence of prostate cancer by 35%.

  • Quercetin: A strong natural antihistamine shown to be very helpful for allergies and histamine-related inflammation. Studies found that it significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke by scavenging free radicals to regulate cholesterol. Food sources are garlic, onions, cayenne pepper and green tea.

  • Bilberry: Known to prevent oxidative damage to capillaries. Found particularly useful for the eye. Shown to help prevent cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Has been used by the military to improve night vision in airforce pilots. Also found to lower blood pressure and reduce blood clots.

  • Grape Seed Extract: A powerful source of proanthocyanidins which have been found to neutralize an even wider range of aggressive free radicals than vitamin E. Shown to strengthen the circulatory system, which is very important in such conditions as varicose veins, hardening of the arteries and impaired blood flow to the brain which can contribute to cognitive and memory loss. It is highly synergistic with other antioxidants, such as Vitamins A, C and E, enhancing their effectiveness.

  • CoQ10: Co-enzyme Q10 is known for its ability to produce energy by assisting cells in the uptake of oxygen. Considered important for asthma, cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Recognized as one of the most powerful free radical scavengers. CoQ10 has been found useful in management and even reversal of arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, periodontal disease, hypertension and cancer.

  • Milk Thistle: The most potent of all herbal detoxifiers. Milk thistle is vitally important for those concerned with environmental pollution, chemical allergies or liver health. Not actually and antioxidant, but milk thistle causes the liver to produce a powerful antioxidant called glutathione.
